Greatest Movies Through 1960

Best Movies Compiled From Many Sources

* Book: Reel Views (2003)

Reel Views by James Berardinelli is subtitled: The Ultimate Guide to THE BEST 1,000 Modern Movies on DVD and Video. Nearly ever movie summarized in his book was released after 1990 as that was the premise of his book … listing summaries of movies that people likely would find in their local video store.  However, he did include a small section he called CLASSICS summarizing a few of the all time classic movies. Here is his classics list (unranked within the two main ratings) for movies released through 1960:

MUST SEE:

  • Casablanca (1942)
  • Citizen Kane (1941)
  • City Lights (1931)
  • It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)
  • Rear Window (1964)
  • Wizard of Oz (1939)

Highly Recommended:

  • The Big Sleep (1946)
  • Gone With The Wind (1939)
  • King Kong (1933)
  • Psycho (1960)
  • Vertigo (1968)

The MUST SEE movies we counted as TOP THREE movies. The HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as TOP TEN movies.

James Berardinelli is quite the movie fanatic – though his REAL job is an electrical engineer!  Roger Ebert had this praise for him way back in June of 1996:

Some of the web-based critics are excellent, and there is one, James Berardinelli who stands above the crowd. Berardinelli describes himself as an electrical engineer from Morristown, NJ, who has written some 1,000 movie reviews over the last four years. That’s more than many full-time critics manage. Berardinelli is literate, opinionated, well-informed and a good writer. He’s also familiar with film history; unlike many web critics, he knows the classics.
